Moving to America, Getting Hitched and Making Chili 0

Eleni and Tim Post CeremonyIt’s official… I was finally allowed (legally) to move to the United States to marry and apply for a green card.

Got married, on a beautiful sunny day in August surrounded by close friends and family.

Then headed off to NYC (mostly Manhattan for our honeymoon) and had some serious sensory overload. Some NYC highlights: FAO Schwartz, The Strand, NYPL, Economy Candy, Curly’s Lunch, Central Park… there were hundreds of things on my to-do list but 3 days just isn’t enough. Next time I want to check out The High Line, Brooklyn (which I haven’t gotten to explore) and Babycakes.

Now I get to begin a whole new process for my green card (which may take up to 18 months!). I’ll keep you posted on how that goes.

Just made a sick pot of  vegan Veggie Chili and its something I tweaked from allrecipes.com and this was savored by vegans, vegetarians and omnivores alike. Here’s the recipe… Read more »

Fiance Visa, Otakuthon and Farewells 0

This week has been quite the whirlwind so I’ll try and sum it up as much as possible.

My fiance visa interview went down much better than I had anticipated. The key thing was to be ORGANIZED and all this would not have been possible without the wisdom of the VisaJourney Online Community, which I strongly recommend to anyone who is considering applying for any type of  US visa. I even met a fellow VJ person at the interview and talking with them helped the time pass. The staff at the US Consulate were very understanding and helpful – one of them even made Tim and I laugh a couple of times. By the time the consular agent told us my visa was approved I was just in such shock that it was actually finally over, that it didn’t fully register at first. Still waiting for it to arrive in the mail of course and after that a whole new process begins for my green card. Its so strange to think that once I leave Canada and am married I won’t be able to re-enter for up to 18 months (at least until my green card comes through).

V at the Water fountain at Otakuthon Once the weekend rolled around it was time for Otakuthon 2009. Montreal’s anime convention at Palais Des Congres. This is only its 3rd year so you can tell some things are not as figured out as they should be. I was only able to get a copy of the schedule opening day which makes planning your way through the convention a little last minute.  But overall I really appreciated all the variety of events (panels, screenings, contests, exhibitions) and it was very well attended (many ages and backgrounds). I think in the next couple of years they’ll work out most of the kinks. Some shows (J-Drama and Anime) that I’ll be checking out further are:

Mei-chan No Shitsuji (J-drama live action) about this orphan high school girl and her majordomo (butler) who has to attend this creepy fancy school where hilarity ensues.

Samurai Sentai Shinkenger (live action) about a team of power ranger wannabes called retainers and their lord who defend the world from evil comical looking creatures.

Guin Saga (anime) based on a 120+ volume japanese fantasy novel series about a man who is cursed with a leopard head and superhuman strength but who has lost all memory of who he is.
